ICMol joins EXPOCIÈNCIA 2025 with science for all the senses...

The Science Park of the University of Valencia will host the 17th edition of Expociència on Saturday, May 10th its annual open day dedicated to science outreach. This year’s event comes with a significant milestone: for the first time, activities specially adapted for people with functional diversity will be included under the theme “Expociència Without Limits”, reinforcing the commitment to a more inclusive and accessible science for everyone.

The Institute of Molecular Science (ICMol) will take part in this special edition with a wide range of interactive workshops aimed at all audiences. These activities combine education, sensory engagement, and fun, inviting participants to explore the fascinating properties of matter through chemistry, physics, and nanoscience.

Hands-on science workshops

- The Chemistry of Slime
This workshop is perfect for learning about polymers, materials chemistry, and the physical and chemical properties of matter in a fun and practical way. Participants will create their own slime while exploring the links between molecular structure and material behavior.

- The Red Cabbage Rainbow
Discover how to make your own pH indicator using red cabbage! Learn about acids and bases as you watch the extract change color depending on the substance it reacts with. A colorful and engaging way to learn chemistry.

- Make Your Own Kryptonite
Watch as sodium acetate crystals form instantly from a supersaturated solution. When a seed crystal or rod is added, crystallization occurs rapidly, releasing heat. Some crystals even glow under special lights when fluorescein is added — just like Kryptonite! A magical mix of science and wonder.

- Escape Room: Professor Aurum’s Lab
The famous Prof. Aurum has mysteriously vanished! All that remains is a chaotic lab full of clues. Can you solve the hidden scientific puzzles and prevent disaster? Team up and decode the logic behind the mayhem… before time runs out!

- Sorting Salt Shaker
Inspired by the Harry Potter universe, this magical science activity sorts young wizards into Hogwarts houses — with a twist. Participants conduct a flame test using different salts to reveal brilliant colors and determine their scientific “house.”

- The Power of the Invisible
Explore phenomena we don’t usually see:

  • Visualize magnetic field lines using iron filings and magnets.

  • Watch a magnet fall slowly inside a copper tube (Lenz's law).

  • Discover magnetic and superconducting levitation.

  • Test the conductivity of salty, sugary, and distilled water — the results may surprise you!

Inclusive science: a sensory atomic force microscope

ICMol is also contributing to the new Sensory Tent, a dedicated space for accessible and inclusive science. This hands-on activity simulates the workings of an atomic force microscope, challenging participants to identify hidden objects using only their sense of touch — a powerful way to understand how scientists explore the invisible nanoworld.
