The MUPOMAT group at the Institute of Molecular Science (ICMol) of the University of Valencia, led by researchers Emilio José Pardo Marín and Jesús Ferrando Soria, is participating in BATEC, a project aimed at developing new technologies to remove emerging contaminants from hospital wastewater. The initiative will combine porous metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), advanced oxidation processes and artificial intelligence to advance towards more efficient and sustainable water treatment.

Hospital wastewater may contain substances that pose challenges for conventional treatment systems. To address this issue, the BATEC project will investigate an integrated technology designed to improve the removal of emerging contaminants.

The proposed approach combines selective adsorption using MOF materials—porous structures composed of metal and organic components capable of interacting with specific substances—with advanced oxidation processes and artificial intelligence to optimise treatment.

New Technologies to Improve Water Treatment

In addition to developing and validating the proposed technology, BATEC will investigate methods for detecting bacterial resistance genes and assess the technical, environmental and economic feasibility of the solution.

The project involves ICMol's MUPOMAT group, co-led by Emilio José Pardo Marín and Jesús Ferrando Soria. Its research focuses on coordination chemistry and the development of multifunctional materials, particularly porous metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), with applications in environmental remediation, magnetism and catalysis.

Scientific Collaboration and European Funding

The consortium comprises the University of Valencia, AIDIMME, Solver Machine Learning, Eurofins IPROMA, and Soluciones Industriales y Tratamientos Ambientales.

The project is part of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) Programme for the Valencian Community 2021–2027, with the institutional participation of IVACE+i and funding from the European Union.
