The authors demonstrate large-scale patterning of single ferritin molecules by sequential (atomic force microscopy local oxidation) and parallel approaches (lithographically controlled wetting). The nanopattern size matches the size of the protein ( 10 nm). Electrostatic interactions, capillary forces, surface functionalization, and nanolithography are used to achieve the desired protein organization. |

J. M. Clemente-Juan, E. Coronado, A. Forment-Aliaga, A. Gaita-Ariño, C. Giménez-Saiz, F. M. Romero, W. Wernsdorfer, R. Biagi, and V. Corradini have recently published the full paper entitle Electronic and Magnetic Study of Polycationic Mn12 Single-Molecule Magnets with a Ground Spin State S = 1 in Inorganic Chemistry (vol. 49, Issue 2, pages 353-768).
This work has been chosen to be the cover subject for the issue in which it appears. The paper report how small changes in the synthetic procedure lead to different isomers of polycationic Mn12 complexes.
These molecules preserve their single-molecule magnet behavior and an unusual spin ground state, S = 11. The same alkylammonium groups, which provide cationic state to the molecules, seem to give rise to their double reduction. |
